Accreditations and Professional Memberships

Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services

UMass Memorial EMS is licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS) as an advanced life support (ALS) ambulance service, with a Special Project Waiver (SPW) for medically enhanced intubation (MEI), one of only four EMS services in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to be able to practice this life saving skill in the pre-hospital setting.

Commission on the Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems

UMass Memorial Lifeflight is licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS) as a Specialty Care Transport Service, one of only three such services in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We are also fully accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS) for rotor wing operations.

Association of Air Medical Services

  Established in 1980, the Association of Air Medical Services (AAMS) is an international association which serves providers of air and surface medical transport systems. The association, a voluntary non-profit organization, encourages and supports its members in maintaining a standard of performance reflecting safe operations and efficient, high quality patient care. AAMS is built on the idea that representation from a variety of medical transport services and businesses can be brought together to share information, collectively resolve problems and provide leadership in the medical transport community.

Massachusetts Ambulance Association

The Massachusetts Ambulance Association is the only recognized trade association of private ambulance services throughout Massachusetts. Currently the association is made up of over 30 private ambulance companies who collectively provide more the 70% of all ambulance transports annually in Massachusetts.

National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch (NAEMD)

The NAED is a non-profit standard-setting organization promoting safe and effective emergency dispatch services world-wide. Comprised of three allied Academies for medical, fire and police dispatching, the NAED supports first-responder related research, unified protocol application, legislation for emergency call center regulation, and strengthening the emergency dispatch community through education, certification, and accreditation.

National Emergency Number Association (NENA)

NENA serves the public safety community as the only professional organization solely focused on 9-1-1 policy, technology, operations, and education issues. With more than 7,000 members in 48 chapters across North America and around the globe, NENA promotes the implementation and awareness of 9-1-1 and international three-digit emergency communications systems.

National Association of EMS Physicians

UMass Memorial EMS managers, administrators, and medical directors are active in several local, state, and national organizations that provide advanced certifications in EMS administration; that support EMS systems and medical control; that provide education and training in EMS disciplines; and that generally promote the profession of EMS across New England and the entire United States:National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP)

International Association of EMS Chiefs (IAEMSC)

The annual IAEMSC Leadership Summit supports the Association's goal of creating a forum for EMS chiefs and leaders to discuss pertinent issues and projects while facilitating access to key federal officials and the attendee's Congressional representatives.

Massachusetts Communications Supervisors Association

The Massachusetts Communications Supervisors Association (MCSA) is an independent, voluntary association of persons who manage, supervise, work in or are involved with the operation of 911 and dispatch organizations.

Our Department

UMass Memorial EMS is a Department of the UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts, the region’s only Level I ACS verified trauma center. UMass Memorial (Worcester) EMS is wholly owned and operated by the Medical Center. UMass Memorial Lifeflight is operated by Air Methods Corp. (QMLA253U) and staffed by UMass Memorial Medical Center.
