EMS Communications Center

The EMS Communications Center was initially established to manage only the air medical communications work required by the nascent flight program in 1982. It has since evolved to be one of the most technologically advanced centers of its kind in the region. The center now dispatches all 9-1-1 ambulances in Worcester and Shrewsbury, manages air medical communications for LifeFlight and other air medical programs, and provides a host of other services to the community and to the medical center that require advanced infrastructure and radio and voice recording capabilities.

UMass Memorial Medical Center has recently invested almost $1 million in a renovation and technology upgrade of our center, making it one of the most technologically advanced units of its kind in Central Massachusetts. Some of our technology includes:

  • Cassidian Vesta/Pallas Next-Gen e911 Call Processing System with ORION Mapstar
  • Zetron Integrator Series 4000 Communications Control System
  • Zoll Data RescueNet Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD)
  • Intermedix FleetEyes GPS Tracking in the center, InMotion Mobile Gateway (OMG) units in ambulances and EMS vehicles
  • NavTeq Weather Reporting

All telephone lines, including both 9-1-1 circuits as well as hospital numbers, are digitally recorded, as are all radio transmissions to and from the EMS Communications Center. We have the ability to communicate on various VHF, UHF, 800 MHz systems with a variety of public safety agencies in and close to our community.

The EMS Communications Center is also a vital link to the trauma service at UMass Memorial Medical Center, responsible for making pre-hospital trauma team notification when an air or ground ambulance service is in-bound with a trauma patient.

UMass Memorial’s EMS Communications Center is located at the UMass Memorial Medical Center – University Campus, overlooking our UMass Memorial LifeFlight helipad and Lake Quinsigamond.
