UMass Memorial Lifeflight

LifeFlight was New England’s first hospital-based air ambulance. Since its founding in 1982, LifeFlight has transported more than 27,000 patients in a geographic area that extends from Southern Connecticut to New Hampshire and from Boston, Massachusetts to Albany, New York. The LifeFlight program began at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center on September 15th 1982. In the past, LifeFlight was an integral part of the education of physicians in Central Massachusetts for many years, with emergency medicine residents acquiring a significant portion of their EMS training while serving as Flight Physicians. Attending staff and EMS fellows also participated as Flight Physicians providing education and program direction.

As of December 2012, we  have transitioned our medical staffing to Flight Nurse and Critical Care Paramedic (CCP). This newest evolution brings UMass Memorial LifeFlight into the future by deploying a standardized model that functions well across almost all of the United States. Our CCPs all underwent a rigorous selection and training process and are now fully competent and successfully providing critical care alongside our experienced nurses. Today, our attending and resident physicians, as well as our EMS Fellows, provide administrative leadership, education to our flight crews, and on- and off-line medical control.

UMass Memorial LifeFlight prides itself on maintaining the highest quality critical care transport program available to our customers, with a relentless focus on safety and efficiency in our operations. Indeed, if it wasn’t for our single-minded pursuit of excellence, we would not have been able to provide 30 years of top quality service to our community.

We are proud to partner with Air Methods under their Alternative Delivery Model. In this business model, Air Methods provides the helicopter, pilots, mechanics, and all transport billing services. UMass Memorial Medical Center provides the critical care staff, medical & program direction, and communications services.
